It would be a brave football club to use the words “historic and proud day” given recent events, but that is exactly what the 10th of February 2021 was for the North Sunshine Football Club.
We are proud to announce that Mia Smith will become the first transgender woman to play football at the Roadrunners after it was confirmed by the WRFL, that she is eligible to pull on the red, white and black jumper.
Working at the Pride of our Footscray Community Bar was where Mia first came across the mighty Roadrunners. The then coach of our women’s team and now current President, Rob Telfer was at “Pride” with a lot of the women players enjoying a night out where they met Mia. Fast forward a couple of weeks and Mia was at Dempster Park cheering on our ladies from the side lines.
I was in awe of how they never gave up, that’s when I thought I would love to play with such an amazing group of womenMia Smith
“The ladies team were short on players and had no bench but I was amazed at how they gave 100% whether they were winning or losing” Mia says. “I was in awe of how they never gave up, that’s when I thought I would love to play with such an amazing group of women”.
Mia has not only had a huge impact on the women’s team since she first came down, helping out wherever she can. Her hard work and commitment to the club was recognised late last year where she became part the Committee of the North Sunshine Football Club.
“The Committee have been awesome in how they have stuck by me”, she says, “The players, the whole club have just been amazing”.
In a presentation to the playing group, President Rob Telfer said that “this is what community footballs about, it’s about everyone being involved”.
“This just shows how far football has come”, he said, “it (football) should be open to everyone, that’s what our club is about, giving everyone a go”.
“When I got the news I was proud, proud that it is our club that has taken the hard steps to fight to make sure we got a result, the result we wanted”.
Now Mia can focus on-field where she can play another important role at the club, helping our ladies team win matches. When we asked how she feels about playing, she said “now that I’m allowed to play, I just hope I don’t let the women and club down”.
We don’t think there is any chance of that Mia!
